This plug-in protects InDesign documents with passwords.

Usage

Contact

Export with Password

Exporting a copy of current opening document and protecting it with a password.

To set a password to current document in InDesign:

  • Open the document you want to protect in InDesign.

  • Click Export with Password... under menu ProtectINDD.

Export from Folder

Set passwords to all InDesign files in a folder.

  • Export From. The parent folder of InDesign documents you want to set passwords to. Click ... button to select.

  • Include Sub-folders.

    • Check it if you want to protect all InDesign documents in sub-folders of Export From recursively.

    • If it was not checked, only indd documents under Export From would be protected.

  • Select Start button to start. A message would be shown once the process is finished.

Preferences

Password

  • Input password for each document. Inputting a password when setting a password to a document.

  • Use {defaultPassword}. Using current {defaultPassword} as the password when setting a password to a document. Clicking Set button to set a default password with hint.

Output

  • Choose output path for each document. Specifying the output path and file name when setting a password to a document.

  • Export to {defaultFolder} with {namePattern}. Exporting the document with {namePattern} to {defaultFolder} when setting a password to a document.

    • {defaultFolder}. The folder that protected documents be stored. Using Set button to select a folder.

    • {namePattern}. The protected document will use <prefix><original name><postfix>.indd as its document name, where <prefix> and <postfix> are configurable.

      For example, if setting 2019_ in <prefix> edit box and _security2 as <postfix>, when setting password to the document report.indd, the final file name would be 2019_report_secrity2.indd.

    • Suppress prompting to confirm for overwrite existing documents. Check this to suppress the confirming for overwriting the documents with same names.

Open a Password-protected Document

When opening a password-protected document:

  • If ProtectINDD or UnprotectINDD was installed in InDesign, the password inputting dialog appears.

    • Input correct password to open the protected document.

    • The prompted document would be opened if select Cancel button.

  • If neither ProtectINDD nor UnprotectINDD was installed. The prompted document would be opened directly.

Customize Prompt Document

The prompt document is the document that will be opened when anyone open the protected-document in InDesign with no ProtectINDD or UnprotectINDD installed.

ProtectINDD has one prompt document by default. If you want to use a customized one, there are some rules to follow.

Using create a customized prompt document requires:

  1. The document should be created by the same version of InDesign that using ProtectINDD.

  2. The content in the document should be clear enough to tell readers this is not a normal document.

  3. Your contact information should be included. Anyone who received the documents protected by you may consult you for more information.

  4. Finally, save that document with exact name prompt.indd and place under <Adobe_InDesign_Folder>/ProtectINDD/.

    • <Adobe_InDesign_Folder> is the installation location of Adobe InDesign.

  5. Next time when you setting passwords to documents, ProtectINDD would use the customized prompt.indd.

Note: The prompt document of documents already have been protected with passwords cannot be replaced directly. To change the prompt document, those documents need to be opened in InDesign with correct passwords first, and then exporting with passwords again.

UnprotectINDD

For those who did not purchase ProtectINDD and need to open password-protected documents, please install this free plug-in.

This plug-in is used to open the password-protected documents. It is free and has limited ability to set passwords to documents.

If was not set in , password setting dialog would appear. Input password and hint on the dialog. Select OK to continue.

If was not set in , navigate to the folder you want to store the password-protected document and type a file name. Select Save.

If default password and default folder were all set in , ProtectINDD would set the default password to the document and save it to default folder directly. No dialog would appear if succeeded.

Preferences button is a quick path to open .

Hint: This feature can be used as the batch mode to set passwords to numbers of documents with proper default settings in .

Refer to section for detail information about that plug-in. If you want to use customized prompt document, please refer to section .

Note: after opening the password-protected document with the correct password, the password set before will be cleared at the same time, no matter the opened document is saved or not. To protect it with a password again, following the steps in .
